Engineering performance

The state-of-art observed at the start of the 3DVIDEO-project concerning both on-line and off-line applications of photogrammetric stations in Finland has been presented in [ ]. There were several installed systems for pointwise measurements in operative real-time applications, such as

• quick check of symmetry deformations of aircraft at Finnish Airforce Bases,
• automatic measurement of rut formations of road pavement at VTT - Technical Research Centre of Finland,
• on-line control of car body orientations in a robotic sealing cell at SAAB-VALMET Ltd. in Uusikaupunki.

The first operative installation for profilewise measurements in Finland was the on-line verification of ship screw geometries in a robotic machining shop at Finnscrew Ltd. in Turenki.

During the 3DVIDEO-project, video digitizing was tested in the following applications [ , ]:

• reverse engineering of a gravel pit,
• digitizing of the topography of sea ice surface,
• underwater digitizing of ice movement,
• digitizing of the surface of a splitted stone,
• digitizing of the blade of a saw.

From the engineering point of view, the digitizing can be performed either directly (on-line) or recorded on a video tape (off-line). The calibration is analytic so that both the camera and feature projector can be installed without any fixed positions. The digitizing is not bound by some fixed scale so that it can be performed for objects of any size. The videogrammetric procedure corresponds to the front-end international level of applicability.

The engineering performance of the computer-controlled driveway built in the 3DVIDEO2-project for laboratory conditions as described in Section 3.1 was tested and the accuracy of m for location error achieved.
