Towards Integration of Laser Scanning and Photogrammetry


Integration of laser scanning and photogrammetric data has a great potential in future mapping applications increasing e.g. accuracy, level of automation and robustness. Efficient integration requires, however, accurate registration. The project focuses on registration methods and their accuracies.

Project description

EuroSDR is arranging an international comparison of registration methods. The project is coordinated by Helsinki University of Technology (TKK) and Finnish Geodetic Institute (FGI), Finland. All participants of the project will get access to following material:
  • Aerial images with known interior and exterior orientation parameters (stereo pairs, two different flying altitudes)
  • Airborne laser scanning data, orientation is deflected on purpose (two or three data sets with different point density)
  • Ground survey data (participants should inform, what kind of ground control information they need)
 The participants of the project should return
  • Description of the registration method applied
  • Laser scanning point clouds that are transformed to the same coordinate system with aerial images  
  • Parameters of used 3D transformation
  • Information about the time used for registration
  • Detailed information about the level of automation
  • Preparing data, ground surveys (TKK, FGI), 2008
  • Delivery of data (FGI), November, 2008 (delayed to December, 2008)
  • Reports and results from participants, November, 2009
  • Comparison and analysis of results (TKK, FGI), 2009-2010
  • Final report, 2010
