Academic suite
-
An academic suite is a part of academy providing
several unique features for its researchers in their common interest of
science.
-
The question was: How would we define these unique features in our case
of "HUT Institute of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing"?
-
The unique features may consist of the following basic elements
-
Theory of 3-D scene reconstruction
-
functional model
-
transformation procedure
-
People
-
deep insight to the science
-
illusions
-
experience
-
interdisciplinary contacts
-

Functional model
-
The model is used for describing the algorithmic relationships (methods)
within the 3-D scene reconstruction as developed or implemented by us (internal
projects).
-
The driving of the model requires individual illusions.
-
It will be controlled by the theory and the experiences (user reply and
internal feedback).
-
The knowledge can be validated by real examples.
-
Final completion usually awaits external project funding.
Scene reconstruction
-
We may define our field of science as "scene reconstruction"
-
Our scientific interest is concentrated to the part of information science,
where the transformations between the 2-D and 3-D representations are discussed.
It also covers the modeling of other phenomena, which affect or limit the
reconstruction process (sensors, environment).
-
The principal input data consist of images whereas the output is the scene
and its visual products. In case of dynamic reconstruction the actual scene
information is used for controlling further processing phases (adaptivity).
-
The image data may consist of image coordinates, but also of range
or radiometric data, or attribute information, or of any other geometrically
ordered previous information like maps.
-
The datum or reference systems (e.g. 3-D coordinate system) are necessary
when combining different kinds of data along each reconstruction process.
-
The knowledge of the behaviour of uncertainties (error propagation)
caused by each individual data acquisition phase is for us important (calibration).
